This film lies somewhere between experimental and documentary grounds and reveals some of F.J. Ossang's lines as a summary of his work. Yet due to the freedom of its format, it allows for a glimpse of change and innovation, in a kind of preamble to a film essay by the French director. "Vladivostok" is divided into two different moments: during the first part, images of two people in a water body illustrate a relationship, or rather, the end of said relationship. Then a tour through the Russian city that shares its name with the film, presents it in a small cinematic symphony, through a sequence of statues (bot of flesh and stone) and anonymous bodies. Winner of the Experimental Competition at Curtas Vila do Conde 2009, this is a vibrant work that could be an early twentieth century recovered movie. It is a film-poem in its bare essentials, converging between words and gestures, for a splendid invocation of silent cinema. (JA)
