Kelly Reichardt pursues her near-sociological work of reflection on profound, rural and forgotten America, symbolically the old and mythical West, the most recurring territory in her work. It is this disenchanted and abandoned America, victim of globalization and financial speculation that seems trapped in an existential dilemma. Conflict between permanence and change is latent. Placed firmly on American independent cinema, Reichardt also works with gender conventions. "Certain Women" follows this path: in a seemingly melodramatic structure (there are all sorts of personal and family dramas), confrontation is avoided and no predictable climax or catharsis is consummated, avoiding the most recurring stereotypes and conventions. Apparently, the action is about nothing, about the routine events of people, about their seemingly monotonous and boring everyday life. It seems that nothing happens to these characters, trapped in a daily life that will remain unchanged after the film is over. (PC)
