A recorded conversation between a mother and her 3-year-old daughter recovering from kidney cancer, where both talk openly about the disease, is the starting point for the animation documentary "Surprise", the first short film by Paulo Patrício. The version of the events is mainly the daughter’s showing a surprising and even fun record of what both went through last year - although it was obviously a difficult and dramatic period - and where the final notes about the present and the future contribute to the optimistic and delicate tone of the film. The little girl’s speech served as an inspiration for very diversified visual styles, and Paulo Patrício never follows strictly the text, rather choosing, in an inventive way, a very free visual interpretation swinging between abstract and realistic tones, giving a precise feeling to the child's interpretation of what that period was.
