The gaze is both familiar and strange: a verdant forest, an abandoned house, a zoo museum. Gradually we enter this primitive universe with the intuition of contemporary knowledge. There is, therefore, a temporal break that "Longe da Amazónia" intends to accentuate. This anachronistic side is marked by the voice over that uses texts from the "Philosophical Journey" by Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira, which records his journey through the Amazon jungle and the remains of the Jurupixuna tribe in the eighteenth century. These are written words of a Westerner surprised by the spectacularity of a world completely different from his. Our gaze, however, is compromised: we know that the ingenuity of Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira is also the one that hides the colonizer's gaze. Still, and evoking a "funeral eulogy" from this explorer, we hear the melancholy with which he lived the last days of his life, forgotten by a regime he served, in the best of intentions. This is the second film by Francisco Carvalho, in an absolute debut in Curtas Vila do Conde. (DR)
