Nuuk, Greenland: a city surrounded by frozen mountains, which have since always been called by their native ancestral names. Their inhabitants never accepted the new Danish names, assigned without any relation to the local culture, history, and geography. Records of a process of colonization and cultural assimilation carried out through language, but also through the transformation of economic activities and the rehousing into concrete buildings piled up together. The powerful images of masses of ice and the inhospitable nature, where human traces appear with dismaying ephemerality, combined with a narration in Greenlandic (with its unusual sentence construction) and a brilliant score, perfectly convey a mystical, ancestral dimension. Filmmaker and visual artist Tinne Zenner presents us a hypnotising film in a powerful tone that brings it close to a more experimental genre. (NM)
