Blending documentary and fiction, “The Song” is a funny essay about growing in a French suburb whose culture is dominated by the American aesthetics. Told from the point of view of Pauline, a girl conflicted about her own future, the storytelling is full of small signs of post-modern life the mall, pop music, Disneyland. In fact, “The Song” resorts to many of MTV's trademarks, such as writing onscreen and a frantic editing. In a way, the film disguises as a pop project in order to criticise a certain tendency to “disneyfy” our lives. Although the film takes place in a French suburb, it is also very familiar, a faithful picture of our contemporaneity. The project is directed by Tiphaine Raffier, who also stars in it, who makes a promising impression. (DR)
