It's from the dramatization of the bodies on screen that João Viana gets the intensity of “Madness”, a black and white short film that tells the story of a young woman, a patient at a psychiatric hospital in Mozambique, who is searching for her son. It's the lie of a worker, who claims he didn't see the child, in one of the few lines of the film, that unleashes a series of acts of rebellion by Lucy, the mother, thus reinforcing the apparent need to keep her confined to that place. But clear-headed Lucy refuses it and runs from the hospital in search of her son. “Madness” questions the limit between reason and madness, as well as the weaknesses of our contemporary society's oppressive models of normalisation. What is madness? This is João Viana's fourth short exhibited at Curtas, after “A Piscina” (2004), “Alfama” (2010) and “Tabatô” (2013). (AJM)
