Made up of digitalised nitrate film frames, “Flame” takes a 1937 epic by Teuvo Tulio as its starting point. “Fallen Asleep When Young”, originally directed by the master of Finnish melodrama, was thought to have been completely lost until, in 2015, part of it was discovered – the third reel of five – by the services of La Cinémathèque Française, in Paris. Sami van Ingen became interested in this discovery, making use of the physical and chemical metamorphosis the images had undergone over time. Some of those images remained intact, whereas others were almost completely deteriorated. In order to reorganise them, van Ingen created rhythmed sequences, contrasting perfection with mutilation, alternating between right and wrong, recontextualising the original narrative in a hypnotic way, and encouraging the viewer to look for relationships between the different shots and their sequencing.
