This year's closing ceremony includes the latest work of Eugène Green, the most Portuguese of all filmmakers born in the USA. Passionate about Portugal, fluent in Portuguese, the director of “The Portuguese Nun” (2009) returns to Lisbon to shoot “How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal”, a journey to Pessoa's universe starring Carloto Cotta, Diogo Dória, Ricardo Gross and Manuel Mozos. This “miniature-film”, as it appears in the opening credits, focusses on one of the most celebrated anecdotes on the career in advertising of Álvaro de Campos, “decadent poet and pederast raised by Jesuits”, who, in 1927, created the famous Coca-Cola slogan – “First it feels weird, then it gets under your skin” –, when the well-known beverage entered the Portuguese territory – even though it would later be forbidden by Portuguese justice and the “Estado Novo”, being commercialised in Portugal only 50 years after. As opposed to what Fernando Pessoa says in the film, Eugène Green's “cultural taste” (or “cinematographic approach” if you like) doesn't compromise, cultivating his love for both the rigorous framing and the Spartan lyricism of the dialogues that characterise his work. Once again, “How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal” combines an apparent contradiction between the framing's immobility and the editing's dynamic, engaging and seducing the audience as far as inviting them into the film, as if they were standing amongst the characters in their constant interactions. Rather than a reflection on Portugal, “How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal” is a declaration of love to Lisbon, to its sunlight and its baroque corners, two elements that still charm Eugène Green. In any case, the candlelit scene, with Fernando Pessoa and Álvaro de Campos, in which a yellow light burns the air, unveils the uniqueness of the filmmaker's approach, as well as his accomplice's, Raphaël O'Byrne, the director of photography.
