Guy Maddin, a filmmaker whose extensive and acclaimed career has been followed by Curtas, now presents “The Green Fog”, a new exploration of his characteristic film language, co-directed with Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson. This tribute to the city of San Francisco uses various images of the Californian city to construct a new film based on other works, some well-known and others more obscure, particularly those produced during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Like the cult film “Los Angeles Plays Itself” (2003) by Thom Andersen (another director with links to Curtas), “The Green Fog” aims to create a cinematographic map of the spaces in the city that have played different roles in various films, using montage and chaining images to produce a new context. One of the works in the vast cinephile imaginary of San Francisco which the film pays tribute to is “Vertigo”, presenting a reinterpretation and reimagination of Hitchcock’s masterpiece as if it were an echo, loosely following the plot but repeating some of the iconic moments via other works, such as the initial rooftop sequence, the chase through the streets, the visit to a church and the grave. The result is a cinematographic treat, a phenomenal exploration of the power of images in dialogue with each other and with the imaginary that each one develops through its relationship to cinema.
