According to the urban dictionaries, Sheila is no longer just a girl’s name but also the name used for a particularly sexy-looking young girl. Hence, the film “Sheila” is a kind of testimony to a self-centred, shallow younger generation that lives only for and from appearances in an increasingly consumerist, throwaway society. “Sheila”, in fact, begins with a set of selfie shots of a teenager named Priscilla seducing someone in her bedroom in front of her computer. These selfies will later return to fill the screen at a turning point in the narrative, disturbing a fleeting and illusory moment of happiness that will change her life. Moving between realism and performance, “Sheila” explores the pain of growing, specifically the transition from adolescence to adulthood, creating a remarkable sound and visual atmosphere. After “Marasmo”, previously screened in the Curtas’ Take One! Section, Gonçalo Loureiro features this year in the Portuguese Competition. (PC)
