In “Suspended Island”, directed by Jane Wilson and Louise Wilson, we're summoned to reflect on the current British identity crisis using a text by Vesna Maric, a British journalist and author that was still a teenager when she arrived to the United Kingdom in 1992 during the Balkan crisis. On the one hand, this work reveals a lost urban geography that most people don't see; on the other hand, by using moving images, we are shown the kinetic link between the architecture of two seemingly distinct places: the Trinity House, located in Newcastle upon Tyne's Quayside, the filmmakers' hometown; in the United Kingdom; and the now abandoned Governors Island coastal fortifications off the coast of Manhattan, in the United States. Within the context of Brexit, the island's image becomes even more resonant, given that the directors consider not only what it means to be British, but also what actually means being from the North. They're interested in what happens when a place's geography becomes porous, or when it turns into a place outside its own frontier. “Suspended Island” shows us the presence of absence. This is the third time the British pair comes to Curtas, where they've presented “The Toxic Camera” and “Undead Sun”. (PD)
