In 1895, the brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière baptized their most famous invention – the Cinématographe, which allowed the recording and projection of moving images. Bill Morrison retrieves a sequence, filmed 30 years later, which shows the two brothers in full discussion around his device. Almost a century after being filmed, the film shows obvious signs of degradation. Proceeding his work of recovering cinema’s memory and exploring the physical characteristics of the film and consequent deterioration, Morrison does not intervene on the image and takes advantage of its natural decomposition, letting the marks of time reinforce the melancholy that those images carry ruthlessly, like ghosts of a world that no longer exists. Bill Morrison is a regular name in Curtas competition, and his work was the subject of a retrospective in 2013, when he was also a member of the festival jury. His work was also shown, in an exhibition context, at Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery. In 2015, he directed, in co-production with Curtas, “The Dockworker’s Dream”, an original commission for a film-concert with the North American band Lambchop. (MD)
