In the late 1960s and early 1970s, future fantasy film master Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Burbs, Innerspace...) and soon-to-be film producer Jon Davidson would go from college to college to show “The Movie Orgy”, a genuine remix of films of all kinds and origins. The screening would go on all night (at its longest, it ran for seven-and-a-half hours) in a festive atmosphere. B-movies were screened alongside trailers, cartoons, weird commercials and the strangest educational and governmental films – no two performances were quite the same, since Dante and Davidson kept on re-editing, and sometimes they even used two projectors simultaneously. In these events, Joe Dante encouraged the audience to move across the room, to go out and get a beer or a slice of pizza and come back, or even to interact with the film, by talking or singing along to the most well-known songs that would pop halfway through the screening. “The Movie Orgy” was designed as a free-flowing cinematic experience, that is, people could come and go at any given moment, they weren't forced to stay at the risk of failing to understand the film or to obey the rules of common courtesy and not disturb the other viewers. Amidst the cult movies that made up the backbone of this gigantic cinematic ‘mash-up’ there were “I Was a Teenage Werewolf” (1957, Gene Fowler Jr.), “Queen of Outer Space” (1958, Edward Bernds), “Little Shop of Horrors” (1960, Roger Corman), “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman” (1958, Nathan H. Juran) and “Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers” (1956, Fred F. Sears). This “Ultimate Version”featured by Curtas Vila do Conde is no longer a 16mm live editing show, but it's still an almost five hour long mind-blowing experience. You can come and go whenever you want, either to eat, drink or listen and dance to the sound of DJs Vicente Abreu and Miguel Dias in the “The Ultimate Music Orgy” side event, until the first light in the morning.
