The films of Galician filmmaker Alberto Vázquez are at once extremely dark and comical, as is the case with this “Homeless Home”, whose humor is particularly bleak. Various monsters, ghosts, witches, ogres and strange creatures straight out of a nightmare live in a world of shadows, with no future prospects, trapped in aimless lives, resorting to drugs and alcohol to better cope with their existence. They long for a different life and for a little bit of love, but a sense of hopelessness hangs over their lives like a dense fog. From this imaginary world that belongs to no particular time or space, comes a fable about an economic, social and family crisis. The creator of “Decorado” (Best Animation and Audience Award at Curtas 2016) reasserts himself as one of the most original contemporary animators, returning to his unsettling and desolate environments to talk about Spain, and all these small towns and villages taken over by unemployment, poverty and depression, where young people survive as they can.
