Directed by trio Robin Klengel, Leonhard Müllner and Michael Stumpf, making their debut at Curtas, “How to Disappear” is an anti-war movie in the true sense of the word, which looks for possibilities of peace in the most unlikely place. Its central theme is the history of deserters – an unexplored part of our past – using images of picturesque hyper-real landscapes from the game “Battlefield V” as backdrop for a cinematic essay-like narrative. The voice off leaves us suspended between two realities – a metaphor for human and social behavior in real war -, as we are led to watch a performance that explores the limits of the game, searching for an answer that reflects on game and war, discipline and disobedience. Game has a history as old as war’s – and in this film, the act of desertion goes beyond the game’s space and action. (MF)
