The new movie by filmmaker Nicolás Pereda, who joins Curtas’ International Competition for the fourth time, after winning the Documentary Grand Prix in 2009, with “Interview with the Earth”, and in 2014, with “The Palace”. This time, Pereda has found a school in Michoacán, named Thomas More, with many stories to tell, such as that of a boy who, after being adopted by an US couple, ended up contracting a skin disease that made him return to his home country, where he lives confined in an exclusive classroom, in total isolation; or that of a famous local writer, Mario Bellatin, who authored the book that would lend its title to the film, and for whose reading the director was invited. A school, its boys, and other real characters, in contrast to the rural landscape of the Mexican countryside, inspired Pereda to make an intense and profound movie, which transcends in every sense a mere institutional documentary.
