In Treewald, or Santa Maria do Herval, a German colony in Brazil founded at the end of the 19th century, the ancestors’ language is still spoken today, the rules of social conduct remain the same, the children listen to traditional stories, and festive dates are celebrated according to German tradition and calendar, even after several generations have past. “The Eyes in the Woods and the Taste in the Water"’s starting point is a text by Turkish-German researcher Ilhami Paker, which presents a rather ironic analysis of the differences between migratory movements, such as those of German families towards Brazil, or young Turkish workmen towards Germany, questioning the complex process of building a national identity and pointing the difficulties that emigrants had to overcome, soon after realizing the dream of a better life, in heaven, would be replaced by a harsh reality. Luciana Mazeto’s and Vinícius Lopes’ film, both making their debut at Curtas, articulates archival footage, specifically old black and white movies, photos, illustrations, and some kids music, to sublimate the narrative centered around three stories that document quite well the lives of families of German origin in Brazil, and the clash between their cultural heritage and a new context of tropical fantasy.
