Debuting at Curtas, Tulapop Saenjaroen is a young Thai artist and filmmaker from Bangkok, interested in questioning and exploring the relationship between the production of images and subjectivities, especially in the context of censorship and freedom in contemporary capitalism. In “People on Sunday”, Saenjaroen wishes to honor, through reinterpretation, “Menschen Am Sonntag” (1930), a homonymous German film directed by Robert Siodmak and Edgar G. Ulmer back in the days of silent film, known for being one of the first movies in cinema history to use non-actors. Set in a quite distinct geography and ideological context, Saenjaroen’s film is interested in episodic stories about idle workers during their downtime, being particularly fascinated with the paradox of non-professional actors effectively working to stage these non-work situations.
