Complexly juxtaposing analogical (on paper and 16mm film) and digital (Google Street View) images through a sensitive editing, “South” originates from the example of two anti-racist and anti-authoritarian liberation movements born in communities from the South Side of both London and Chicago. Still, the film can’t help but make symbolic references to the “global south”, namely the United States’ conservative south or the vile apartheid regime in South Africa. Alternating these images with more intimate moments of his own journey, having lived in both London and Chicago, Morgan Quaintance offers a reflection on the power of both individual and collective voices in contemporary societies, as well as on the importance of civic uprising and artistic expression as means for historical and social change. The work also marks the Curtas debut of Quaintance, a London-based artist who has become a regular presence in several international film festivals. (PC)
