This story begins with two men who bear a common tattoo, and who are both confined: the first in a prison; the second, working on a spanish navy ship. When they finally meet again, we realize they are brothers, and the man referenced in the tattoo is their father, who died when they were both still young. This tragic event will drastically alter the course of their lives: because of their paths, the elder is warmly received when he returns home, while the younger one, Isra, just out of prison, is barely recognized by his daughters, and is rejected by his wife. Isra is determined to change his ways, but the doors around him are closed, in a vicious cycle dominated by “drugs, prison, or death”, which leads him to a negative spiral: angry at the world, Isra is only trying to hide an enormous fragility. “Between Two Waters” (2018) is a powerful portrait of a community on the andalusian island of San Fernando, which makes use of non-professional actors, in a remarkable work by Lacuesta that keeps the film close to a documentary style. Its heavy emotional impact also comes from the empathy and humanism with which Lacuesta films these characters and their daily struggles, elevating their search for redemption and a better future.
