The return to a land once left in search of better luck, even if temporary, is often tainted by melancholy and a sense of detachment discovered in the meantime. However, when this return is synonymous with setback, this detachment gives place to a feeling of non-belonging and uncertainty. Rafa, after four years studying in Paris, returns to the “Pueblo” where he grew up, but arrives with no future prospects, nor achievements to show. Elena López Riera aptly resorts to this archetype in order to create a beautiful contemplation on someone in a state of suspension: Rafa, in-between conversations with strangers and old friends, wanders the streets as if lost in a maze, in a sort of limbo. This is also a clash between the new and the old, tradition and progress. On its way, life goes on in the village, as if indifferent to the protagonist’s anguish. (JA)
