On a TV set, we see images of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. Shortly after, the question is posed to the filmmaker: when will you find a boyfriend? Four years after “Antonio, Dashing Antonio”, in which Ana Maria Gomes sought to know from her family the reasons why an uncle had left for Brazil and never returned, the director once again films the family’s village, Bustarenga, in São Pedro do Sul, this time with the purpose of capturing the advices everyone insist on giving her once they find out she is still single. Testimonies from different women – her grandmother, aunts – share personal stories while trying to make her realize that time waits for no one, revealing the social pressure, and the conservative and religion-related ideas that still dominate the village – but there is also space for dissenting opinions, in a depiction both sincere and amusing. The movie also portrays some of the possible suitors, on a lighter note. What seemed to be a documentary focused only on the ideas of the people depicted adds yet another layer when the camera captures the doubts of the filmmaker herself, fed by everyone’s insistence that she find her “prince charming”.
