Winner of the José Saramago Award in 2007, Valter Hugo Mãe is one of the most important authors in the current landscape of Portuguese literature. He was born in Angola, but since the age of 9 has been living in Vila do Conde, a city that won him over with its weather between river, sea and mountain, with the quietness alluded to by Antero de Quental and, above all, with the tertulian state of mind that guides Vila do Conde’s daily life. Directed by Graça Castanheira, from an idea by Carlos Vaz Marques, this film is part of the series “Herdeiros de Saramago”, whose goal is to document the daily lives of the eleven Portuguese-speaking authors who have won the award sponsored by the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature. In particular, this episode revisits Valter Hugo Mãe’s writing, read by the author himself and by Carlos Vaz Marques, while delineating a living portrait of the writer, showing his loved ones, people, animals, landscapes, songs, rituals, beliefs, fears and other previously undisclosed confessions.
