Using images from Resende family’s archive (1970s and 80s), as well as short sound excerpts from other movies, especially “Abraham’s Valley” (1993, directed by Manoel de Oliveira and adapted from Agustina Bessa-Luís’ homonymous novel), “The art of delusion” creates a sublime and careful narrative, very attentive to gestures and details, but also ironic and subversive. Madame Bovary, Flaubert’s heroin appropriated by Agustina, is the starting point for a reflection on gender identity and social values, an exercise in dismantling women’s traditional role in the dominant patriarchal society, questioning the conservative morality that imposes a repressive social rule. Cláudia Varejão is back to Curtas, where she has previously presented, in this same competition, her “family trilogy” (“Weekend”, 2007, “Cold Day”, 2009, “Morning Light”, 2011). (PC)
