Artist César Manrique (1919-1992), born in the Canary archipelago’s Lanzarote island, in the middle of the Atlantic, dedicated his life to portraying his homeland’s unique landscape. Filmed in 16mm, “De Una Isla” is a poetic work, particularly attuned to the immaterial heritage of Lanzarote’s landscape, highlighting some of the territory’s exotic elements, as well as more realistic and tragic ones, such as the abandoned refugee boats coming from the African continent. Directed by José Luis Guerín, known for “Train of Shadows” (1997), “Work in Progress” (2001), and “The Academy of Muses” (2015), the film is another meditative work that reflects on the boundaries of documentary cinema.
