About 20 years ago, the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York were the target of an unprecedented terrorist attack. The world watched live on TV what would become one of recent history’s most mediatized events, in a collective trauma of unimaginable proportions. Mathias Müller and Christoph Girardet present us another type of images – not the catastrophe ones – that yet have also contributed to the construction of our collective memory: an exhaustive collection of footage gathered from several movies in which the towers are the main character, perhaps the way most of us knew them. The cadence and intensity of the editing are conjugated with the music in order to create a dramatic and evocative effect. Watching the film, it is impossible for anyone to not remember what would happen next. Müller and Girardet deepen the psychological games they play with the viewer, developing a very unique language in which the appropriation of images from other movies serves a very specific purpose, therefore justifying it. The duo has been one of the most regular presences at Curtas Vila do Conde’s competitions, in which they have snatched up many awards. In addition, they were also responsible for Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery’s inaugural exhibit in its opening as a permanent space and have been part of other programmes at the festival and exhibits at the gallery.
