Filmed in 16mm after the lockdown imposed by the current pandemic, “Flowers Blooming in Our Throats” reaffirms Belgian filmmaker Eva Giolo’s belief in the language she had already articulated in her previous work, “A Tongue Called Mother”. This time, a group of friends locked up in their own houses perform different and brief actions, following Giolo’s instructions. In this choreography of hands and light, the gestures work like words, composing visual sequences that are repeated, and where time is underlined by the rotation of a little spinning toy. What is sought here is an image of domestic intimacy expressed in between fragile balances. An exercise of balances and subtle forces that could resemble the provocative games by Dutch artist Manon de Boer, but that, in Giolo, are played with hands. From the tensions in the bodies, the apparently simple and always truly complex relationships are studied. (RiM)
