Panamanian director Ana Elena Tejera films her grandmother as she performs the most mundane household chores. During this routine, the grandmother seems to remember a past long gone, as well as a ghost, her husband (the filmmaker’s grandfather), an army man who was used as an instrument of oppression by the dictatorship that ruled the country for decades, a sadness that also invaded and ruled their house. If the dictatorship imposed silence, it was also felt at home, where any talk about the outside repression was forbidden. However, as much as the mind tries to forget, the body won’t let it, and the passage of time and the scars of the past are ruthless. A gorgeous reflection on memory, this is Ana Elena Tejera’s return to Curtas, where she was featured in the New Voices sidebar in 2020, with “Panquiaco”. (JA)
