Morgan Quaintance, winner of the Great Prize of the Experimental Competition of the 28th edition of Curtas Vila do Conde, returns with the short film “Surviving You, Always”, where Timothy Leary gives us an intellectual and romanticized view about psychedelic drugs and life in the London of the 1990s, loaded by the violence of class and racial segregation. Morgan Quaintance opposes two distinct realities on the same image level, a bipolarity of worlds and experiences that form the backdrop of a disconcerting film, challenging the viewer's attention: on the one hand, we hear Timothy Leary's voice on the influence of psychedelic drugs on the expansion of human consciousness; on the other, the account of a young man from South London who spent every weekend under the influence of acids with a friend, told through still images and written narration. To pursue both perspectives is a mind relaxation exercise, but Morgan Quaintance's continuous editing evokes this firm feeling when a connection is made between two persons. Even so, as with hallucinations, there is still the idea that teenage friendships last forever – but they rarely do. (PD)
