"La Peste" is a visual and musical deconstruction of one of the masterpieces of cinema history. Based on the 1922 film by F.W. Murnau of 1922, the authors create a work where images and soundscapes give a new conceptual and narrative dimension to Murnau's film in the year of its centenary. The epidemic, the animals and death, the landscapes of Transylvania, or the (ghostly) transportation by boat, cart, and horse are some of the pillars of this new plot, where the music of Raül Refree also provokes new readings of this timeless work, as well as an unexpected new emotion in the spectator.
Raül Refree is a Catalan composer, performer and producer with a multifaceted oeuvre, ranging from experimental rock to flamenco, pop music to jazz. Besides his own discography, he has been producing or collaborating with such diverse names as Rosalía, Niño de Elche or Lee Ranaldo. He has also composed soundtracks for films, including "Entre dos aguas", by Isaki Lacuesta, a filmmaker in focus and member of the jury of Curtas in 2020.
Pedro Maia works predominantly with 16mm and 8mm film, extrapolating the limits and aesthetics of analog cinema, manipulating raw materials and challenging the traditional process, continuously expanding the visual and technological heritage of classical cinematographic methods. His career is closely linked to that of Curtas, where he was a collaborator and programmer and has been presenting his work at the festival since 2007, which includes music videos, film-concerts and experimental films.
